Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has appointed Brendan Gleeson as the new secretary general of his Department, following approval by the Government.

Gleeson was until now assistant secretary general, in a role covering EU and international affairs, Brexit and dairy controls. The secretary general is the highest-ranking civil servant in the Department of Agriculture.

"Previously, he has been responsible for the development of the livestock and food sectors, and he played a prominent role in delivering a significant reform of the Common Agricultural Policy during Ireland’s presidency of the European Union in 2013," Minister Creed said.

Gleeson sits on the Teagasc Authority. He held previous positions in other departments and at the European Commission.

He succeeds Aidan O’Driscoll who recently moved to the Department of Justice.
